Dennis Shillen shares what led him to a career in law, the sacrifices and complexities of the legal profession, and emerging trends the new generation of lawyers should consider.
When asked what his motivation for becoming a lawyer was, Shillen’s answer was simple: “Having read “To Kill a Mockingbird” motivated me to pursue a career in law.”
As Shillen recalled his journey as a law student, he said working at a federal union for a year before applying to law school was critical for him. He shared, “the communication skills I learned and practiced in that position helped me the most.” Students looking for suitable work experience for law school should take note of this.
Since new legal fields and trends are constantly emerging, Shillen also shared that international relations is a great field for aspiring lawyers to consider to future-proof themselves in the industry.
